In this heartwarming and insightful video, I share my journey from the vibrant city of Islamabad to the busy streets of London, where my son Jake and I set out to discover the life of one Pakistani who emigrated to the UK and built a successful business. This adventure is a blend of culture, food, and passion, showcasing the beautiful connection between the two countries.
Moving from Islamabad to London was quite a change, especially for someone who grew up surrounded by the rich traditions of Pakistan. The cool, often rainy weather of London was in stark contrast to the sunny, welcoming streets of Islamabad. But what truly connected me to this new home was the large Pakistani community that calls East London home, and the familiar flavors of home, even in a foreign land.
Our first stop on this adventure was a restaurant called Kaiba Pass, a Peshawari-inspired eatery in East London, run by Captain Azar Hussain. A former Pakistani Army captain, Azar moved to the UK after meeting a British-Pakistani woman, and like many immigrants, he started from scratch. From working multiple jobs to finding his passion in the hospitality industry, Azarās journey was not without challenges. In 2009, he opened Kaiba Pass, bringing the flavors of Peshawar to London. The restaurant, with its authentic menu and inviting atmosphere, quickly became a hit. His personal story of perseverance and determination serves as an inspiration to many, including myself.
Kaiba Pass is a true testament to Pakistani hospitality. The moment we walked in, I was transported back to Pakistan, not just by the food, but by the warm, familial environment created by the staff. The space itself was decorated with elements of Pakistani culture, from traditional furnishings to murals that reminded me of home. The food was divineāflavorful and rich, with classics like Chapli Kebabs and Karai. Every bite reminded me of the beauty of Pakistanās culinary heritage. Azarās passion for cooking is evident in every dish, as he often works alongside his staff to ensure that every meal meets the highest standards.
But the experience wasnāt just about food. Sufi music played a central role in this cultural immersion. Azar invited his friend, Sahil Salamat, a renowned Sufi singer, to perform for us. Sahil is the nephew of the late, legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, one of the greatest voices in Sufi music. His performance was captivating, filling the restaurant with soulful sounds that resonated deep within.
After the performance, we were treated to a delicious meal, and Azar shared his vision for his next venture: a European-inspired restaurant in Lahore, where he hopes to bring the flavors of the UK to Pakistan. His entrepreneurial spirit is inspiring, and itās clear that heās making a meaningful impact on both sides of the world.
What I loved most about this experience was the overwhelming sense of community and hospitality that transcends borders. Azarās story is one of hard work, perseverance, and love for his roots. It was a beautiful reminder that no matter where we go in the world, the values of family, food, and culture connect us all.
As we wrapped up the evening, I couldnāt help but appreciate the warm hospitality and the unforgettable flavors of Kaiba Pass. It was a night filled with music, great food, and even better company.
Stay tuned as I continue to explore the fascinating stories of Pakistanis living abroad and the connections we share across the globe.
